02 - 2 tbsp cornstarch
03 - 1/2 tsp salt
04 - 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
05 - 2 tbsp vegetable oil

→ For the Chili Lime Sauce

06 - 2 tbsp soy sauce
07 - 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
08 - 1 tbsp maple syrup or agave syrup
09 - 1 tbsp chili paste
10 - 1 tsp lime zest
11 - 1 clove garlic, finely minced
12 - 1/2 tsp toasted sesame oil

→ For Garnish

13 - 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
14 - 1 sliced green onion
15 - Lime wedges

# How to Make It:

01 - Cut the pressed tofu into 3/4 inch cubes.
02 - In a medium bowl, toss tofu cubes gently with cornstarch, salt, and pepper until evenly coated.
03 - Heat vegetable oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add tofu cubes in a single layer. Fry, turning occasionally, until golden and crispy on all sides, about 12–15 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside on a plate lined with paper towels.
04 - In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, lime juice, maple syrup, chili paste, lime zest, minced garlic, and sesame oil to make the sauce.
05 - Wipe out the skillet, lower heat to medium, and pour in the sauce. Let simmer for 1–2 minutes until slightly thickened.
06 - Return the crispy tofu to the skillet and toss gently to coat all pieces in the sauce. Cook for 2 more minutes, stirring to ensure even glazing.
07 - Transfer the tofu bites to a serving dish. Garnish with cilantro, green onions, and lime wedges. Serve immediately.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • The crispy exterior gives way to tender, flavorful tofu inside that will make you forget you are eating plant-based protein
  • That chili lime sauce hits every single flavor note, spicy, tangy, slightly sweet, and completely addictive
02 -
  • Crowding the pan will make your tofu steam instead of fry, so work in batches if your skillet is not large enough
  • The sauce thickens quickly as it cools, so toss the tofu immediately and do not let it sit too long before serving
03 -
  • Use tamari instead of soy sauce to keep this completely gluten-free without sacrificing any flavor
  • Leftovers (if you somehow have any) reheat beautifully in a 350°F oven for 10 minutes to restore that crunch
